ABSTRACT

Certain cognitive processes that are claimed to have no explanation in terms of orthodox science make up a group of psychological phenomena that in some respects may be said to be central to anomalistic phenomena: They have been recognized and believed in by many people since times immemorial, and they are often invoked in explaining many other types of anomalistic phenomena. There is also a large extant body of experimental studies of these phenomena. They are popularly referred to by such terms as mind reading, second sight, foretelling the future or prophecy, and mind over matter. They have been, under many names and in many specific forms, part of the folklore of every culture, and continue to be so today, including the folklore of the most advanced civilized societies.
