Politeness Theory: Exemplar and Exemplary
In his 1952 textbook Asch said that he expected to find universal systems arising out of interaction that have produced motives and capacities as central to the nature of man as biological needs. Today we have a theory of politeness which is an exemplar of the kind of invariant system Asch described. Politeness theory is also, I think, exemplary or worthy of imitation. For whom is it exemplary? For experimental social psychology today.
