ABSTRACT

The present chapter explores the role of the hippocampus in spatial memory and anxiety. The hippocampus is usually classified as archicortex and as a component of the limbic system. This might lead one to suppose that it should subserve some phylogenetically fundamental functions. Indeed, in the early literature, it was specifically assigned a role in emotion (e.g., Papez, 1937), largely because of its extensive cortical inflow and subcortical outflow. By contrast, two recent areas of research suggest a role for the hippocampus in memory processes.
