ABSTRACT

Nothing Dr. Gleser has said in her discussion of my chapter is unacceptable to me. But I do wish to emphasize the difference in emphasis. In a sense, this difference is analogous to the proverbial diverse reactions to a 4-ounce wine glass with 2 ounces of wine in it. Her reaction to the traditional estimates of heritability in this context seems to me to be “half full,” mine has been “half empty.” Moreover, in the terms of my third aspect of the relationship between science and values, I believe the welfare of children in our society calls for an emphasis on the potential range of reaction for healthy human genotypes rather than the one evident from existing societal conditions. I want us to look at psychological development in terms of what might and ought to be rather than in terms of what exists under prevailing conditions of childrearing.
