ABSTRACT
The recognition of the connection between understanding language and understanding the world was itself an achievement. A t the beginning of the machine translation efforts, language processing was modeled largely as the process of manipulating the symbols of a language, rather than as deriving and expressing concepts and intentions. C urrent research in nat ural language highlights the encoding of these concepts and intentions in a computational framework as much as it does the formal properties of languages.
