ABSTRACT

By the way, it so happens, in this case at least, that this extra information was available to the systems that actually existed 10 years ago; in other words, in order to answer this first question the system had already made certain computations. One of the computations it made was whether or not Computer Science 101 was offered and had obviously discovered that it was not offered. But the interface system did not take advantage of the fact by informing the person making the inquiries about this situation. This is instructive: The early systems already had the ability to produce that kind of response, but it was not considered a requirement of the systems that they exhibit certain communicative functions, even though such func tions are certainly exhibited by a person had he or she been asked the initial question.
