ABSTRACT

My parents were working-class immigrants, and my early years were very much dominated by education. There were various kinds of lessons and Yiddish school, and there was constant pressure to do well. My family had an almost mystical belief in the power of education to change the condition of life. It was also a strong value, a reverence for learning, and it was from them that I learned to love to learn, and to love and respect those who are learned.
