ABSTRACT

Having obtained evidence for the integration of continuous sources of information in bimodal speech perception, the current branch of the binary-opposition tree involves the issue of whether the two sources of information are dependent or independent. As also somewhat apparent in the other contrasts, the question of independence is to some extent model dependent (Ashby & Townsend, 1986). Assuming separate evaluation and integration operations, independent sources of information imply that the information value determined in the evaluation of one source remains independent of the information value of the other. Dependent sources imply a violation of this principle.
