The perception of the speech code has enjoyed a rich history of attention not only from psychologists but also from engineers and computer scientists. Much of the past work on speech has been perhaps overly influenced by technological considerations in striving to produce a speech reception machine. In spite of a huge commitment of energy and resources, a full understanding of how the human auditory system processes complex acoustic stimuli—particularly speech sounds—remains largely elusive.
