Gerontological Social Work Research: Current Status and Future Directions
The purpose of this paper is to take stock of where we are in gerontological social work research. There have been repeated calls to increase the number of well-trained and productive social work researchers who can advance knowledge for practice and policy in aging (Lubben, 2001; Scharlach, Damron-Rodriguez, Robinson, & Feldman, 2000). As several major initiatives aimed at increasing this type of scholarship are now underway, it is timely to assess the current state of research in the field and to consider how best to consolidate and advance our gains. Such an accounting can also serve as a baseline for future evaluations of progress as the initiatives now underway have their intended impact.
