While most seniors live with family, a substantial number, 29% live alone. Women are more likely to live alone (58% of those 85 and over, 49% ofthose 75 to 84). The oldest women are also more apt to be living with extended family (22% of those 85 and over, 12% of those 75-84). While on average only 7% of seniors reside in institutions this increases to 34% of those 85 and over (Statistics Canada, 1999).
