ABSTRACT

Health care informatics concerns the theory and practice of patient-centered information management. The burgeoning growth of clinical knowledge and steady advance of technology require that health professionals command effective information management skills. Changes in clinical education have witnessed the introduction of computer-aided instruction and distance learning, growth of problem-based learning, and emphasis on evidence-based practice. Proficiency with information technology is indispensable to the health professional in training. Efforts to define a core curriculum for allied health professions emphasize the central importance of information technology training. 1 Professional organizations of occupational, physical, and respiratory therapists now require informatics training in accredited education programs. 2 3 - 4
