On the Outside Looking In: In Search of Women’s Sexual Experience
How much do we know about the nature of women’s sexual prob lems, sorrows and pain, as defined by women? What do we know about “normal” women’s sexual feelings, behaviour and expression, let alone about optimal female sexuality? In trying to comprehend the entire spectrum of women’s sexual phenomena, that is, sexual functioning, sexual events, relationships, issues and concerns, it is striking that the predominant vantage point is from the outside looking in. Female sexu ality tends to be defined and studied in terms of male-dominated para digms.
