ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a woman’s sense of self through four areas: establishment of self-esteem and spirituality—as Sir William Osler has pointed out, spirituality and faith are an important source of energy; growth and development in women; research in female intelligence; and some practical suggestions to assist in growth of the self. Stories flow from soul or self. Self-esteem is a key building block for healthy self-confidence in both children and adults. Many people have misconceptions about the word self. Learning is a lifelong process, and we need affirmation for all ways of expressing the self. Julia Cameron offers a practical way of promoting the growth of the self. Virginia Satir presents ideas one has about oneself as “self-worth.”
