ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of Athena, one of the Greek goddesses, daughter of Zeus; family systems and the stories about the women who went before us; and the changing place of women in the countries of South Africa, the United States, and India. Jean Shinoda Bolen writes about her experience with women seeking therapy to learn how to be better protagonists or heroines in their own life stories. She presents us with images of women—provided by the Greek goddesses—that have stayed alive in the human imagination for over 3,000 years. In general, the place of women is improving throughout the world. A PBS documentary titled “A Woman’s Place,” discusses the changing situation of women in South Africa, the United States, and India. The place of women is being challenged all over the world. Laws are not static, and interventions on the behalf of women are needed.
