ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how women’s spirituality is restricted by past roles and by negative attitudes about women. A patristic saying, “The glory of God is humanity fully alive,”4 is a challenge to change the status of women who are only “partially alive.” Early in Judeo-Christian history, women developed a sense of sacral unworthiness. Some religious groups have projected onto women evil and negativity. Change is needed to expand the number of women in the church calendar of Roman Catholics. Negative projections can lead to a devaluation of women and, taken to the extreme, violence. Images of women in the media can set the stage for advertisement, pornography, and violence. Spirituality is a healing resource for both men and women.
