ABSTRACT

From the beginning we have been wrestling with central dilemmas for pastoral counselors: What is God doing in pastoral psychotherapy? What is at stake here? What is faithful about it? We posited guiding principles that would govern the work: the playfulness of God; God's persistent, steadfast love; the centrality of healing; the dialectic of individual and community. The discussion has maintained loyalty to psychoanalysis, process thought, and feminism, and named its intent to render the central redemptive movements of pastoral psychotherapy intelligible in relation to them. To complete its task, it must weave these elements into a single fabric, showing the relationship of these questions to each other and to the major themes of the book.
