ABSTRACT

When we speak of a “milieu” in a clinical context, we typically refer to the whole living environment surrounding a client in a group care program or the daily environment set up in a day program. For some time, the milieu has been regarded as an avenue for clinical work. Austrian August Aichorn has been regarded as the “father” of milieu therapy and was perhaps one of the earliest (1907) to conceptualize the construction of a living environment to produce therapeutic effect (McCord, 1982).
