Now You See It, Now You Don't: Altering Problematic Patterns of Viewing
Pages 24

If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and, this you have the power to revoke at any moment.

Marcus Aurelius

The views that youth and others associated with youth subscribe to can engender or suppress hope. Some views are validating, open up possibilities, and move youth toward future goals. Others are invalidating and inhibit and close down pathways with possibilities. When troubling problems develop with youth in residential treatment (as well as in other contexts), oftentimes it's due to unhelpful views. Views typically come in two forms-attentional patterns and stories. Attentional patterns typically find youth or others focusing on certain aspects of a youth's life. Stories represent how youth or others have come to describe their perceptions over time.
