ABSTRACT

Some long-term relationships not only endure, but also begin, because of spiritual affinity rather than sexual excitement. One might even argue that if high erotic expectations are absent from the outset, one later avoids the difficult transition, often a failure, to an open relationship and platonic affection. Such, in any case, is my tentative conclusion after twenty-three years of life with David. At its outset, of course, this understanding lay far in the future.
