Understanding the Military As an Ethnic Identity
The basic premise of this chapter is that individuals who embrace the military lifestyle develop over time an increasing identification with the military as a core component of who they are, much like an ethnic identity (see also Chapters 13, 14, and 15). The chapter begins by outlining the core components of what constitutes an ethnic identity. Then a general review is given of the distinctness of the military community, especially the family. Third, I advocate that being in the military leads to a military identity. Finally, I suggest areas for exploration and research including basic research on a military identity scale.
