The Scapegoat As the Bearer of Evil

In ancient Hebrew times, on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, once a year the high priest sacrificed a goat as a sin offering for the people. The priest then symbolically laid the sins of the people on the back of a second sacrificial goat and sent it out into the wilder­ ness to die. In this manner, the people were divested of their sins, and the community was considered healed.
