Postscript: Becoming a Functional Spiritual Family
In the Judeo-Christian heritage, the tasks of religious communi ties are five: (1) to provide a place where we can safely express and share our experience of faith; (2) to preserve tradition; (3) to create and maintain ethical community; (4) to develop and nurture a sense of mission; and (5) to enable a personal experience of God. In order to do these things, religious communities need healthy communica tion patterns, adequate resources for dispute resolution, and the recognition that conflict is necessary to growth and change. They also need courage along with the willingness to accept that the path toward spiritual growth is through the shattering of one’s illusions. God is mirrored in relationship, and the perfection of relationship is a sacred process.
