ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the solutions for the challenges faced by lesbian, gay, and bisexual teens. These include changing societal attitudes, providing more role models, educating families, eliminating untenable school conditions, monitoring juvenile courts, establishing special education programs and schools. Then opening all youth programs, involving the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community, training more knowledgeable and unbiased professionals, and organizing college students. Massachusetts is again leading the way with innovative teacher education programs that address sexual orientation. Students would benefit from peer training led by young lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults with student assistance. Schools, districts, and state departments of education should establish grievance procedures to enable students and teachers to complain about harassment or abuse by others in the school setting. The lesbian, gay, and bisexual community can be a sanctuary and a source of comfort and information for queer kids.
