Friendly PEERsuasionSM Against Substance Use: The Girls IncorporatedSM Model and Evaluation

In 1988-1989 Girls Incorporated (formerly Girls Clubs of America) expanded its comprehensive health and sexuality programming with the introduction of Friendly PEERsuasion. This program, based on the social influence model, was designed to help girls ages II through 14 acquire knowledge, skills and support systems to avoid substance abuse. This article describes the program design, implementation in four Girls Incorporated affiliates and evaluation of the program at these demonstration sites.
