ABSTRACT

Intakes generally involve four to six individual sessions of fifty minutes but may, with certain individuals, take even longer. An important part of the intake is to discuss a man's current and past alcohol and drug use. Psychological testing is not necessary to make a sound clinical decision about whether a man is appropriate for admission into the group program. Near the end of the intake, usually during the sixth session, the man is asked to set some specific and concrete behavioral goals about what he wishes to change about himself as a result of his involvement in the domestic abuse treatment. Finally, if a decision is made that he will enter the domestic abuse group, the man receives the group member booklet in the final individual session and the group goals, rules, and expectations are reviewed.
