ABSTRACT
The Arabic word for madness, junoon, is derived from the word jinni, which means evil spirit. The Islamic influence on Arab psychology is revealed in the idea that life, as well as the future, is “in the hands of Allah ”. In the authoritarian way of living, almost everything is determined by an external authority, which leaves small room for a person to feel a sense of responsibility for his or her own destiny. Arabs, in general, tolerate mental and emotional disturbance to a considerable degree as long as it is not expressed in undue violence, shameful behavior, or uncontrollable overactivity. Exorcism has been applied by some religious healers in many Arab countries. The entrance to the cave was guarded by two large rocks, arched over and surmounted by a cross. Arab families discourage long-term hospitalization or institutionalization for their family members. Males are currently seeking psychotherapy more than females.
