Theme is the organizer of our awareness. It includes our apperceptive mass-who/what we are on both a known and unconscious level and the structure which we create as we present ourselves to the world. It includes our combined apperceptive mass which is created when we join with others. It gives our lives meaning and coherence in what would otherwise be a buzz and whir or impressions and memories.)

Theme can be described in many ways. Rainette Frantz, a founder and faculty member at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, states its meaning in various ways:

Theme points the way that the session may take .... It integrates the session ... In Gestalt, we view theme as schema or a screen through which we perceive our lives. They are the stories we tell ourselves in the dark of night, in the sometimes painful dawn to make some sense out of our experience.2
