ABSTRACT

Attempting to devise a method of introducing homework that is amenable to compliance, and that can be initiated early in therapy, led to the conclusion that the oft-used technique of, "Well, for homework this week I would like you to . . ." is an inefficient strategy as well as an ineffective method of enhancing homework compliance. Three therapeutic techniques appear to be related to enhancing homework compliance, namely, summarization, empowerment, and active involvement. While these techniques are often used throughout therapy in a variety of contexts, they are not often incorporated into the formulation of homework.
