ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter – which is a completely revised, rearranged and enlarged version of the one in the first edition of this Manual (1984, pp. 467–475) – is to look in some detail at the most important types of museum publications and to provide a bibliographic guide to the literature on them. It provides, therefore, a sequel to Geoffrey Stansfield’s Sources of Museological Literature (Information Sheet No. 9, 2nd edition, Museums Association, London, 1976) and complements his joint publication with Peter Woodhead, Keyguide to Information Sources in Museum Studies (Mansell, London, 1989). It also complements the seminar volumes Museum Publishing: Problems and Potential, edited by Jenni Calder (National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh, 1988) and Museum Publications in Science, Technology and Medicine, edited by R. I. H. Charlton for two specialist museum groups (see Conference Proceedings, p. 606). To a lesser extent it complements the revised and enlarged second edition of Lois Swan Jones’ Art Research Methods and Resources. A Guide to Finding Art Information (Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co., Dubuque, Iowa, 1984).
