ABSTRACT

The cult of the cosmic gods and adoration of the powers of Nature must have been in some form or other coeval with the existence of men in the Valley of the Nile. The dynastic texts state that Nunu is to say the primeval collection of water was the 'Father of the Gods'. The Nile-god is represented in the form of a man painted green or blue, with cluster of aquatic plants on his head; he is sometimes seen pouring out water from libation vases. The Moon-god appears as a man in the archaic form of PTAH, Min, Osiris &c, i.e. with his legs closed together. The Earth-god Gebb appears sometimes as a goose and sometimes as a goose-headed man. In the papyri his body covered with little patches of green to indicate his character as a god of vegetation. The Sky-goddess or female counterpart of Gebb was Nut, whose old fetish object was a probably symbolizing a human uterus.
