ABSTRACT

Moon lady had set out on her homeward journey with a thankful heart. Dismayed, Moon Lady looked east and west at the horrible destruction throughout the neighbourhood. Moon Lady was exhausted by her long walk and sank down on the lowest step of a stone terrace. In her usual kindly manner, she invited the old woman to sit beside her and proceeded to question her as to the fate of acquaintances and neighbours. Moon Lady chose a modest room for herself with straw-strewn floor and a single narrow door. The brick oven-bed at the wall facing the door also served as a hearth for cooking. Moon Lady laid the child by her side on the hard oven-bed, with only a single thin linen sheet for covering. Her anxiety was intensified when the tenant-farmer's wife appeared and proclaimed in hard, angry tones that the honour of the farm entrusted to them had been smirched by the robbery.
