ABSTRACT

The city of Hong Kong is, to a large extent, the product of human vision, endeavour and enterprise. It is a city that has a vibrancy that excites and stimulates the senses of local residents and visitors alike throughout each day and much of the night. In a nutshell, Hong Kong has become a City of Vision and can be expected to use new challenges and opportunities in many diverse ways. More "domestic" events like Hong Kong's economic take off, 1960s disturbances and the 1997 Handover that many world observers read as the "end" of Hong Kong entail local refractions of wider changes. Globalization, in recent years, has become a conflictive reality for all citizens of the world. Economic opportunities for some represent patterns of exploitation for others, while human movements may mean escape, interest, consumption, or hope. Finally, the human stories of Hong Kong, present in various forms of diaspora and imagination.
