ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that four major issues in internationalizing China’s universities: overseas student education, the English language, the Chinese professoriate, and the role of Hong Kong higher education. Overseas student education is often considered as a form of diplomatic investment for future political and economic relations. Internationally, overseas student education is often regarded as a prime strategy in achieving university internationalization, against the backdrop of globalization. Educational quality is a big concern of international students. International studies have found that educational quality ranks the first in attracting foreign students. The origin of overseas students in different historical periods shows that China’s overseas student education is closely related to its economic, political and social situation. Knowledge of foreign languages has often been considered an important indicator of internationalization of higher education. Hong Kong’s economic strength has allowed Hong Kong higher education to be very internationally oriented, and firmly incorporated into the global community.
