ABSTRACT

kathy and I had a sense before, during, and after our wedding that we were making history—breaking ground in positioning lesbian weddings within traditional Judaism. We wanted to record this history, and so along with our thank-you cards, we sent out a request for guests to write us a note about their experience of our wedding. We received numerous responses, most from people who were deeply moved by the ceremony and who felt in some way transformed by it. One of our guests, a heterosexual modern Orthodox woman, wrote:

I was quite impacted by my sense of the courage it required of you both to stand so boldly in your love and commitment to one another. It seemed to me, given the innovative and “untraditional” nature of your “traditional” wedding, that there were few places for the two of you to hide.
