T H E Q U E S T I O N this chapter addresses is how to analyse femininity and masculinity or construct a social psychology of women and men. Is femininity a set o f traits - narcissism, dependence, communion and so on — developing naturally from biological differences, a set of psychological states fixed by the different experiences, limitations and potentialities o f being a woman; or is it a set o f stereotypes basic to roles and taken up by the people who adopt those roles?
