T H I S P A P E R reexamines research on modernity and middle age, exploring the evolution of the questions that initiated the study as the findings affected the investigators. To put it more simply, where a report o f current research allows researchers to say what they did, what they found, and what they make o f it, this retrospective report o f research initiated many years ago forces me to remember the questions that haunt me, admit the mistakes I made, and consider what I have learned with the passage of time.
