ABSTRACT

The inventors of Spanish-language television in the U.S. were Don Emilio Azcarraga, founded of the Mexican television empire Televisa, and Rene Anselmo, who today is owner of PanAmSat, the only privately owned commercial satellite. The idea then was to bring in, at very low cost, programs produced in Mexico, for broadcast in U.S. markets with sizeable Hispanic populations, such as San Antonio and Los Angeles. From the very beginning, Spanish-language television was intended as a service to the Hispanic population. These were the roots of what later came to be Univisi6n, the enterprise that I directed up until about a year ago.
