ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates sprawl as a holistic phenomenon existing in a dialectical relationship with development elsewhere in the city. It explores the implications and repercussions through the broad framework of sustainability, urban sprawl and the responses in the inner parts of the city in laissez-faire Bangkok and planned Melbourne. In the process the chapter also raises further questions and implications for the cross-national comparisons that are increasingly necessitated by the current search for global consensus between developing and developed countries to mitigate climate change in an equitable manner (Figure 9.1).
