ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, we described the dynamic and catalyzing effects of the predator, the raw archetypal energy that inspires the antagonistic pattern. In the psychopathic structure, we explored these dynamics while considering the fairy tale “The Sea-Hare.” For the alpha structure in the narcissistic phase, this energy is well imaged in the story “King Thrushbeard.” 1 As we will explore, this tale echoes several elements of “The Sea-Hare.” Both the similarities and the key differences between these tales are apparent in the very first two sentences of this new story:

A king had a daughter who was beautiful beyond all measure, but so proud and haughty withal that no suitor was good enough for her. She sent away one after another, and ridiculed them as well… . She had something to say against each one.
