ABSTRACT

Ulrich Fabricius finds no extant narrative images of the apostles prior to the year 1000 CE to which he can attribute the influence of Christian apocrypha upon early Christian art – other than those of Peter and Paul. 1 Fabricius seeks the influence of Christian apocrypha upon art rather than the existence of parallels. Further, as Fabricius’ purpose is basically to make a survey of pictorial art extant before the year 1000 CE, he does not consider medieval images in order to hypothesize that early Christian models of these images once existed.
