ABSTRACT
Tourism has been, and will continue to be, one of the most important economic and social development activities in the Mediterranean coastal regions. History and the natural environment have played an important role in this direction. However, rapid and uncontrolled tourism growth have contributed to the deterioration of the coastal environment, especially in the more developed regions of Spain and Italy. There is a growing recognition that the natural and cultural environment is an important economic resource worth preserving.
