ABSTRACT

One of the most important approaches comes from author old friend Alvin Mahrer, in a book called Psychotherapeutic Change. This chapter talks about a type of research called in-session outcome research, which Mahrer has pioneered and written about a good deal now. Mahrer was very struck by the early work of Carl Rogers in the research field. He quotes Rogers as saying that he was particularly impressed by the presence of moments of movement-moments in therapy where it appears that change actually occurs. These are often moments of strong emotion. Practical knowledge is knowing as exemplified in the exercise of some special skill or proficiency. Old paradigm research is for the most part content with propositional knowledge, though some studies in the field provide some practical knowledge. But new paradigm research essentially and necessarily provides propositional, practical and experiential knowledge the knowing which comes out of it is thicker and more substantial than that coming out of old paradigm research.
