ABSTRACT

The selections from Philo are from the two most important series of treatises in his corpus: the first is from the Allegorical Commentary (AC) and the second from the Exposition of the Law (EL). The former is a running allegorical commentary on Gen 2:1–41:24 which is largely built on two structural devices: (a) the use of questions and answers, and (b) elaborate expansions through the citation and analysis of related biblical texts. 1 The latter is a systematic interpretation of the law which uses allegorical exegesis sparingly. 2 Since each series is an independent work, we will consider the texts separately.
