ABSTRACT

The ‘Lord's Prayer’ appears in the Didache and the Gospel of Matthew (both late first century ce) and Luke (late first to early second century ce). The similarity, often even identity, of the prayer's Greek wording in the three documents indicates a common preceding tradition (‘Q’). 1 Efforts to translate the present Greek texts into Aramaic have failed. 2 All three documents offer the prayer as a model for Jesus’ followers in the context of longer teachings about worship (Matthew, Didache) or prayer (Luke). The prayer has continued to be important to theology and piety. 3
