ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on one particular aspect of dramatherapy–the use of and understanding of stories themselves as the supervisor. In one of the dramatherapy sessions, the young male as being in competition with the older male was dancing a very sensual dance with a stick, in a ritualistic, performance-like manner. Dramatherapists were made to believe that supervision should be focused on understanding the process of the interaction of the symbols in the psychological framework. The use of stories and metaphors as therapeutic tools is reported widely in the professional literature. Since the procedure of using metaphors calls for circumvention of rational thinking and forays into less conscious realms, their use sometimes leads to situations akin to therapy. The use of imagination and metaphors is liable or likely to change the internal balance or to ‘shake’ the defence mechanisms. The use of guided imagery and metaphors can often bring about quick and dramatic developments.
