ABSTRACT
Modem German is the supra-regional standard of a connected language area in Central Europe. It has evolved as a written language. The so-called standard pronunciation is and has always been strongly influenced by the written standard. All users of German can understand the standard pronunciation, the vast majority of them can write and read standard orthography, but only a minority uses the standard pronunciation in everyday speech.
