ABSTRACT

Because James Hillman is an advocate of soul, he often takes a position that is sharply critical of spirituality, especially the kind of spirituality that seeks to escape or transcend the pleasures and demands of ordinary earthly life. His way of distinguishing soul from spirit is unfamiliar to many. In ordinary usage, spirit and soul are almost interchangeable. But the distinction is central for Hillman. He sees the attitudes and activities of spirit, especially spirituality that is split off from soul, as a threat to values of soul.
