Country houses

Many visitors to country houses, perhaps the majority in recent years, do not actually enter the main house at all. They might take tea in the converted stable block, but they have come to see the gardens, the model village and railway, the zoo, the theme park. So country houses are part of an increasingly important leisure industry the clients of which hardly give them a thought as palaces of power or of art. Indeed the power association is barely present in the public mind, while that of art is only retained because of the frequent news of sales of pictures.
