ABSTRACT

As we saw in Chapter 8, there has been an enormous amount of research on classroom interaction and teacher-pupil interactions in particular. In the next two chapters we concentrate on two specific topics, involving teacher-pupil interactions, that have been the subject of much debate and research. In this chapter we look at teachers’ expectations and then, in the next chapter, sex differences in classroom interaction. We have chosen these two areas because they are educationally important, involve lively debate and controversy, are informed by psychological perspectives and are centrally connected to classroom interactions.
